Starting from the basic concepts of Optics, the student will acquire knowledge about artificial illumination, from the point of view of the perception, the technology, the design and the applications.
The skills requested at the end of the course are:
- The capacity of learning and capacity of using data bases and electronics journals
- The achievement of an adequate level of basic knowledge, that will allow the student to deepen in the future specific topics about the course, also by consulting advanced textbooks and specialized journals.
Physics and optics of the light radiation; the vision: the eye and the brain; photobiological and nonvisual effects of the light; the light perception and the visual performances; concepts and definitions regarding light and colour; the light sources, technical, scientific and technological aspects; LED; the illumination apparatus: shapes and optics; photometry and light measurement: the modelling and simulation of the light and its effects
Experimental activity in the ultrafast nonlinear optics and linear optics laboratories in the framework of the active research lines (beam shaping, laser microfabrication laser, lighting, etc...)
Oral exam with questions on the laboratory activity and the theoretical concepts learnt.
The exam consists in at least three questions on the different parts of the program and on the laboratory activities performed.
The answers should develop the requested topics, and for each question the student will get up to 10 points. The final score will be the sum of these three points. In the case of maximum score (30), the student will be given a third question for the merit, in order to evaluate the capacity of the student to reason on topics slightly outside the course program, even if tightly connected.
