Associate professor at the Department of Biotechnology and Life Sciences (DBSV) of the University of Insubria. In 1993 and in 1995 she was Visiting Researcher at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, USA) where she studied the enzymes involved in ganglioside metabolism. From 1990 to 1999 she worked at the University of Milano where she studied membrane lipid modifications. In 1999, she moved to the DBSV where she used Xenopus embryos as bioassay to evaluate the biological risk of toxic compound including nanoparticles. She also acquired skills in molecular biology techniques that she applied in the research of biomarkers in different animal species. In these last years, she has focused her attention on metal and engineered nanoparticles functionalized with biological compounds for medical and biotechnological applications. In particular, she was interested to investigate the effect of nanoparticles on biological systems. More recently, she has conducted research on toxicity and gene expression modification induced by metal and engineered nanoparticles both in stabilized cell lines and in human adult adipose stem cells. She is the author of more than 100 impacted publications.
In 2003 and 2011 she got the grants by "Associazione Amici dell'Università dell’insubria"
2013: P.I. of the project “NANOSTEM - ENGINEERED NANOPARTICLE TOXICITY ON MESENCHYMAL STEM CELLS”. Grant Rif. 2013-1052 supported by Cariplo Foundation.
2013 P.I. for the University INSUBRIA (Varese) of the Research Project of National interest (PRIN) THE "SYSTEMS BIOLOGY" IN THE STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF XENOBIOTICS IN MARINE ORGANISMS FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE STATE OF HEALTH ENVIRONMENT: BIOTECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS FOR POTENTIAL RESTORATION STRATEGIES
